Never heard of this delicious berry before? No need to be ashamed...it’s fairly new to the orchard scene in North America.

Scientifically known as Lonicera caerulea L, the berry has a rich heritage, including its origin in Hokkaido, Japan, where the indigenous Ainu people gave it the name haskappu, meaning “little presents at the end of branches”.

But more than a history or science lesson, you're probably interested to know what this unique berry has to offer. To truly appreciate it you need to experience it...but we are always happy to tell people all the reasons that we love it!

TASTE

Most describe the flavour of the haskap berry as a mix between blueberry, raspberry, and blackcurrant. We tend to agree that is a good approximation but think you'll soon appreciate haskap for its' own complex and distinctive flavours. The skin of a haskap is soft and, although it does have small seeds, they are almost imperceptible. It’s incredibly high juice content guarantees an explosion of flavour in your mouth.

NUTRITION

Today many people eat berries for their antioxidant properties. Studies show haskap berries contain substantially more antioxidants than other berries or fruits, so you can feel good about enjoying their wonderful taste. VERSATILITY

Whether you are looking to enjoy haskap berries for their wonderful taste or amazing health benefits (why not both?), the good news is there is no shortage of ways to do so. These berries are amazing fresh, as juice, in a smoothie, on ice cream, yogurt, as a jam or in any type of baking. COLOUR

Colour - The skin of a haskap berry is a dark blue, but unlike blueberry, the flesh is also dark ruby in colour - a testament to its high levels of antioxidants. A side benefit of this is that the haskap makes its strong presence known by imparting an intense crimson colour on anything you mix it with. It’s truly a beautiful sight on ice cream, yogurt or in a cocktail.

EARLY HARVEST

Our haskap berries are usually ready to harvest by the end of June, weeks before either blueberries or strawberries. After a long cold winter, who wants to wait to start getting healthy by eating delicious and nutritious berries!?
